WPRA Monday 15 June. As agreed at the AGM the next meeting of the Association, to be held on Monday 15 June, is to prepare for WPRA’s Representation at the June meeting of the Cheam North and Worcester Park Local Committee. This Local Committee Meeting will be held in the Wesley Hall, Christ Church with St Philip, on Thursday 18 June. The theme for both meetings is Green/Environmental Sustainability. Both are open to the public. In addition a specific issue in respect of flood risks and defences of Beverley Brook will be presented to the Local Committee on 18 June in the form of a Petition.

The WPRA meeting on 15 June is to identify issues of concern to take forward to the Local Committee, and to make suggestions for future Agenda items. The Agenda for the Local committee on 18 June should be published on Sutton Council’s website during the previous week on www.sutton.gov.uk. This is your opportunity to get Worcester Park’s voice heard.

Local Committee. Themes for future meetings of the Local Committee will include Local History, Planning Procedures, Crime Prevention and the Voluntary Sector. The Local Committee consists of the nine Ward Councillors from Worcester Park, Nonsuch and Stonecot Wards with non-voting Community Representatives from WPRA, Churchill and Priory RA, the Acorn Project, Friends of Cuddington Rec and Friends of Sutton Common. The Local Committee has a dual function for local Council decision-making on non-planning matters and to provide a public forum.

Report from WPRA AGM held on 18 May. The future of WPRA has been saved, for another year at least, thanks to Angela Marriott agreeing to fill the vacant position of Chairman for the coming year. Two other previous committee members were re-elected with two new additions. Further offers of help are still required if we are to fulfil our objectives and meet the challenges of the key issues listed below. And there are still vacancies on the committee which could be filled by co-option during the year. It cannot all be left to just a small committee. The Committee for 2009/10: Chairman Angela Marriott, Hon Treasurer Pat Harris, Members John Evers, Tom Higgs, Hazel Williams.

Key Issues identified at the AGM.
• Revision of Planning Guidance (Local Development Framework) to allow higher density development across a large section of Worcester Park either side of Central Road, and taller buildings in Worcester Park Town Centre. This has implications for changing the face of Worcester Park as we know it, with flats replacing houses and gardens, taller buildings and more traffic congestion. If the guidance is accepted it will be more difficult for Sutton Council to reject planning applications, either for piecemeal developments, or large scale schemes to replace houses and gardens.
• Relocation of Cheam Baths to make way for more housing.
• School places for Worcester Park Children.
• Flood risks and defences of Beverley Brook.
• Safe removal of contaminated soils from the Hamptons.

Subscriptions Reminder. Subscriptions for the current year were due on 1 April. Forms are available in the Worcester Park Library behind the counter.
